What Makes Agency Collaboration So Rewarding: 3 Personal Insights

Working at an agency has been an incredibly fulfilling journey that has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. The perfect blend of an exciting, ever-evolving atmosphere, paired with just the right amount of stability, makes this environment a truly unique experience. I've come to realize that finding the right fit between yourself and the agency is key to staying motivated and discovering opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of collaborating with a variety of design agencies, ranging from small boutique studios to large marketing firms as a contractor. In my interactions, I've encountered diverse approaches to working with contractors. Some agencies viewed me as "just a contractor," keeping me at arm's length, while others welcomed me as a valuable team member, recognizing the unique perspectives and skills I brought to the table. It's crucial to find a place that values your contributions and allows you to actively contribute to their success, regardless of your employment status.

If you're considering working with agencies, whether on a freelance basis or as a permanent team member, let me share some of my favorite aspects of this dynamic environment:

Diversity in Projects and Clients

One of the main attractions of working at a design agency is the abundance of diversity in projects and clients. It's exhilarating to embark on a wide array of creative challenges, each unique in its own right. The versatility in the types of projects keeps the work exciting and provides constant learning opportunities and growth.

Working with Diverse Teams

The diversity within the agency extends beyond clients and projects. I have had the privilege of collaborating with various contractors, including designers, developers, copywriters, and project managers. This exposure to different skill sets and perspectives has been eye-opening. Interacting with professionals from outside the design world has given me valuable insights into how to improve collaboration and communication.

Making an Impact

One of the key reasons I have found immense satisfaction in my role at a agency is the opportunity to make a tangible impact. At my current agency, Wizardly, the company culture encourages open communication and values the opinions of every team member. This inclusive approach has allowed me to influence not only the design department but also the overall business operations.

I have actively contributed to creating templates, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and processes that streamline workflows. For example, I designed a Figma web design template that aligns with Wizardly's project flow, focusing on the design and UX aspects and the handover to development.

The ability to bring my non-design skills to the table and to have a say in shaping the company's future has been particularly fulfilling. For instance, when I realized that incorporating more UX design could add value to Wizardly’s offerings, I initiated a conversation with one of the co-founders and presented my ideas. This proactive approach led to an expansion of their services, including lower-cost options for clients who couldn't afford extensive UX work. It's incredibly gratifying to witness my contributions have a positive impact on the agency's growth and client satisfaction.

Working at a design agency has been an incredible journey that has taught me valuable skills, make meaningful connections, and the opportunity to make a genuine impact. If this resonates with you, I highly recommend dipping your toes into the waters of agency life by partnering with a few agencies as a contractor. It's a fantastic way to explore and discover the perfect fit for you!
